The Butterfly and the Oak Tree

This one is a meditation on strength and fragility as well as  protection and vulnerability. While studying mediation at Naropa, I was struck by the idea that true strength and courage is to allow oneself to experience a tender, open heart without the layers of armor we usually wear over it for protection. It is an exquisite practice; painful, but ultimately liberating and healing.

This sculpture is ceramic instead of my usual paprclay. She is painted with watercolor, varnished and her body is hand-dyed and hand-felted wool over a wooden base.

She is listed in my Etsy shop
